How To: What to Feed Fish at Different Pond Temperatures

1 minute read

How-To

Knowing your water temperature is extremely important when it comes to feeding. Feeding the wrong type of food in certain temperatures can create severe issues for fish and the pond as well. To monitor, you're going to need a thermometer. We carry a few here and installation is pretty basic. Simply tether a line and tie off to the edge of your pond for easy access.

The guidelines are as follows. Obviously, these aren't set in stone, so deviating 5 degrees above or below isn't a huge issue.

Under 45ºF No Feeding. Period.

45-65ºF Cold Weather Wheat Germ recommended- high carbohydrate percentage foods

65-85ºF Summer Staple, Growth Food, Color Enhancing Food- high protein based foods

Over 85/90ºF Cut back, stop feeding; Fish can't metabolize at high temperatures or low temperatures. Also, any uneaten food will add to the organic load and oxygen depletion in the water.

There are a few things every pond owner should have, and a thermometer is definitely one of them. For more information on feeding fish or specific fish foods, please don't hesitate to call.
