Webb’s story is one of passion, innovation, and unwavering dedication. It all started in the 1970s. It was then that our co-founder, Kevin Webb, first tasted the entrepreneurial spirit by selling corn from a roadside stand with his father in Maryland. This early experience cultivated a deep-rooted connection to the fruits of hard labor and a profound understanding of customer needs. This foundation proved invaluable when Webb's Farm and Garden Center opened its doors in 1981, marking the inception of a legacy that would shape the water gardening industry for generations to come.

Meeting Customer Demand

A pivotal moment arrived when Kevin, at just 19, embarked on a landscaping venture. This endeavor not only expanded Webb's services to include patios, gardens, and, crucially, backyard ponds, but also ignited a passion for customer satisfaction. The joy of transforming outdoor spaces into personal havens became the cornerstone of Webb’s water garden philosophy.

Growing Interest in Water Gardens

As the allure of water gardens captivated homeowners in the 1980s, Webb's responded to the surging demand. Recognizing the need for comprehensive pond care, the company introduced its first in-store pond display in 1988, a showcase that featured the beloved koi fish, Zeus and Apollo. This marked a significant step in Webb’s evolution as a dedicated water gardening resource.

A Family Affair

From the very beginning, Webb’s has been a whole family business. As Kevin started a family of his own, he followed in the footsteps of his co-owner parents Joe and Linda. Wife, Maura Webb, worked part-time at the store while attending college, as well as in the evenings and summers while she taught kindergarten at a local school. Maura’s brothers Tom and Matt also worked at Webb’s during the 1980s. Once children Ashley and Mike came along in the early 1990s, they of course got involved, too. Whether tagging along to a landscaping job site, lending a hand in the retail store, or greeting customers, the Webb’s kids learned the value of hard work and the dedication it took to run a small business early.

1980s-1990s

The New World of Online

The enchantment of Christmas was a hallmark of Webb’s. Festive decorations and the aroma of fresh trees filled the store each year, captivating customers. In a serendipitous turn of events, leftover nutcrackers in 1996 sparked a successful online venture on eBay, convincing Webb's to join the early .com era with its own website in 1997.

Pond and Water Garden Experts

Also in 1996, Webb’s moved to a new retail location that opened many opportunities to show the business’s capabilities for designing and building ponds. The new location included several displays, including 10 aquatic plant ponds, 2 greenhouses and 4 display ponds—the largest at 5 feet deep and able to hold 13,000 gallons.

By 2010, Webb’s transitioned to being a fully e-commerce business. Our expansive 32,000-square-foot warehouse opened in 2013 and became the heart of our operations, enabling efficient order fulfillment and rapid shipping. This transition allowed us to focus on providing exceptional customer service and support. The Webb family legacy continues to thrive, with the third generation actively involved in shaping the company's future.
